Islamic books for kids in India: a parent’s guide
The short answer
Look for Islamic books that name their sources, use simple English your child already reads at school, and follow a clear order from who Allah is to the Prophets and good manners. Many families read in English and talk it over in Urdu, Hindi or their home language. E-books that work on any phone make daily reading easier.
Indian Muslim parents have more choice of Islamic books for children than ever: bookshop shelves, stalls outside the masjid after Jumu’ah, online stores and apps. More choice makes it harder to know what to trust, what language to buy in, and whether a phone is a good place to read. This guide covers what to check, the English, Urdu or Hindi question, print or digital, and what ilmbee costs in rupees.
What should I look for in an Islamic book for kids?
- Named sources. Stories of the Prophets should come from the Qur’an, and sayings of the Prophet ﷺ from named, authentic hadith collections. Be wary of popular stories that no one can trace.
- One idea a page. Short sentences, concrete words, and pictures that show what the sentence says.
- Pictures that honour. Illustrations should match the words and treat the Prophets and Companions with honour.
- Arabic done properly. The names of Allah, key words and ayat in Arabic script, fully vowelled, and always translated. Arabic should never be decoration.
- A clear order. Single books are fine; a series that builds, from who Allah is to the Prophets, salah and manners, teaches far more.
- Something after the story. A few questions or an activity that turn reading into learning.

English, Urdu or Hindi: which language should Islamic stories be in?
There is no single right answer, but there is a useful rule: read in the language your child reads best, and talk in the language your family talks in.
- Children in English-medium schools often read English most easily. Stories in English are the ones they will pick up and read on their own.
- Many families speak Urdu, Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, Tamil or another language at home. That is often the language of feelings and of faith. Read the story in English, then talk about it in your home language: “What would you have done?”
- Arabic stays Arabic for the Qur’an, duas and the names of Allah, whatever language the story is in.
To be clear about ilmbee: Series 01 is written in English, with Arabic used where it matters, the names of Allah, key terms and the ayah each book is built on, fully vowelled and always translated. It is not in Urdu or Hindi. If you are less confident reading English aloud, Read to me reads every page and lights up each word as it is read, so your child can follow along, and you can retell the story afterwards in your own words.
Printed books or e-books?
| Printed books | E-books | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Lovely to hold and turn | On a screen |
| Carrying | Heavy for travel | Always on the phone, on the train or at Nani’s house |
| Wear and tear | Pages tear, covers bend | Do not wear out |
| Siblings | One copy, taking turns | Depends on the seller; ilmbee covers up to four children |
| Reading aloud | Needs an adult or a confident reader | Some are narrated |
| Screen time | None | Some, so set limits |
Many families use both: printed books for bedtime, e-books for travel and the day. ilmbee’s complete series can also be printed at home for your own children.
Can children read Islamic books on a phone?
Yes, and in many homes the phone is the device there is. A few things make it work well:
- No app to install. ilmbee opens in any phone browser, so it does not fill up a phone that is already full.
- Offline once opened. When a book has opened once, it keeps working with the connection off, which helps on patchy mobile data and long journeys.
- One phone, several children. Up to four child profiles, each with their own place in the series, honey, levels and certificates.
- Read together where you can. A short, shared story is not the same as scrolling. See Making screen time count for ways to keep screen time purposeful.

The books are for ages 4 to 11 and are read in order. They begin with Allah is the Creator (Book 01) and go on through creation, the Prophet ﷺ (Prophet Muhammad (Book 12)), salah (Let Us Perform Salah (Book 13)), Ramadan, the Prophets’ stories, the Companions, manners and duas.
What about maktabs, madrasahs and teachers?
Many children learn to read the Qur’an at a local maktab or madrasah. Stories at home do not replace that; they give the Qur’an lessons a context, so a child knows who the Prophets were and why salah matters. Teachers and madrasahs who want to use the books with a class can agree terms directly through /schools.
